Spotlight on KUMO

TableTalks by BHS

KUMO has been honored with the Tableware International Award of Excellence in the Fine Dinnerware category at Ambiente 2026.
The renowned awards presented by the trade magazine Tableware International are among the most prestigious in the global tableware industry. An independent jury of experts honors collections that set benchmarks in the professional hospitality sector. This year, more than 220 entries from around the world were evaluated. For us, this award confirms that KUMO shapes contemporary gastronomy with clarity and substance.

Deceptively sophisticated, the partially sandblasted porcelain offers an understated yet impressive design innovation, while the purist shapes serve food with drama and panache.

From Experiment to Award: Designer
Claudia Schoemig on the Creation of KUMO

KUMO originally emerged from
the idea of exploring new experimental approaches to the traditional slip-casting technique in the studio. During this time, organic silhouettes with cloud-like overlaps began to take shape. When SCHÖNWALD approached me with the idea of developing a multi-piece Chefs Collection, this new direction immediately felt right. The contours, with their gentle outward curves, create an elegant stage for contemporary cuisine, bringing lightness and a poetic quality to the table.

To keep the collection versatile and flexible, we complemented the cloud-inspired shapes with selected classic round forms. For the material, we chose the refined, natural white Noble China. This porcelain allows for exceptional delicacy and harmonizes perfectly with the soft shapes of KUMO. In this way, we combine the refined character of handcrafted work with the efficiency of industrial production.

For me, KUMO is a design that feels alive through its unusual formal language. At the same time, the reduced aesthetic gives the pieces a quiet, understated presence that makes them timeless. A special detail is the interplay of textures on selected plates: the sandblasted matte areas echo the cloud-like forms and create a subtle contrast with the glazed surfaces.

I am very pleased that KUMO has received the Tableware International Award. In an international context, it is a wonderful confirmation of the design’s relevance and contemporary appeal.

Harmony of Form and Presentation

The collection accompanies the entire menu sequence – from amuse-bouche to dessert. Plates and bowls follow a system of controlled asymmetry and flowing transitions.

The matte, sandblasted surfaces connect the series and structure the table composition. They create a dialogue between round forms and sculptural silhouettes, adding a refined tactile contrast to the glazed surfaces.

KUMO was developed for the demands of fine dining and hospitality. The collection meets the requirements of professional service while providing a clear framework for the presentation of dishes. Whether in fine dining settings or modern interiors, KUMO integrates effortlessly into a wide range of concepts.
